The surname Kettleby was first found in Leicestershire, at Ab Kettleby, a village and civil parish in the Melton district that dates back to the Domesday Book of where it was listed as Chetelbi. A Roman mosaic and pavement were found beneath the present St. James churchyard, indicating the presence of a villa at that time. The story says that Goddard Oxenbridge's life was ended when in a drunken state he was sawn in two with a wooden saw at Groaning Bridge by children who believed in the rumours. It has been suggested that these stories were spread about the Catholic Oxenbridge by Protestants during the Reformation.
